I have learned over the years to appreciate all styles of music. There is so much that can be gleaned from various guitar styles and cultures. 

I try to encourage all my students to keep an open mind. Try to think "outside" the box. Take the time to really listen to how guitar players express themselves in Jazz, Blues, or Classical music.

Rock music saw some amazing changes when Yngwie Malmsteen incorporated classical styles into rock music. His music revolutionized the way guitar players thought about rock music. Steve Morse also studied classical guitar while attending college and brought his influence into rock music.
